In the aft of the University Library, two tables covered in purple cloth with the embellishment of the library were strung out roughly one hour after the noon Carillon rang. On the tables were the sign-in sheets for an upcoming event — the Makerspace.

The Creative Technologies Lab at the University at Albany officially opened its Makerspace in the Uptown Campus’ University Library on April 2. Students can access the plethora of technology offered by the Lab and learn about the experiential learning opportunities for free.

Carey Hatch, dean of the University Libraries, spoke at the commencement. “We’ve got tools that allow you to do 3D imaging or models, we’ve got AR and VR headsets, we’ve got sewing available…we support repairing electronics,” Hatch said.

“The folks that are supporting this area are primarily students,” Hatch added. “We have a very welcoming environment.”

Oliver Vestal, a student intern at Makerspace, described the offered activities as a “labor of love.”

UAlbany student, and artist, Tahreem said, “I’ve really been wanting to create a 3D print of a model and wanting to learn how to 3D print.”

The ample space by the rear of the library for the Creative Technologies Lab and the Makerspace provides a collaborative surface for students to make and experiment their very own projects. Students can also access and borrow specific equipment for class projects or any personal work.

“We’re friendly, we are happy to see you jump in,” Vestal said. “We are happy to give you your space to experiment on your own.”

The Makerspace has modern 3D printers, button makers, a cricut machine, a sewing machine and VR systems for students to use. First-time users must complete a short mandatory in-person orientation prior to using the equipment in the Lab.

The Creative Technologies Lab provides students with the technology, equipment and the guidance to kickstart creative projects. The current hours for the Lab are from Monday through Thursday, 2 p.m. through 8 p.m. Hours may change during academic breaks and summer break.
