Senate’s second meeting hosts Supreme Court appointments

The Student Association (SA) Senate met for their second meeting last Wednesday, Sept. 9 to appoint court nominees and discuss logistics for the semester. 

Chair Jaden Burke announced that there will be an emergency senate meeting next week, taking place on Wednesday Sept. 16 to swear in new senators who won in the fall general election, as well as holding the vice chair election. 

President Ava-Rae Calloway delivered updates in her executive report regarding Block Party and getting all student positions set up for the academic year. 

“We’re still getting the directors settled into their positions,” Calloway said. “We’ve had a couple issues concerning MyInvolvement and their emails and the administration that takes care of that but we are working on getting them access to those things.” 

Vice President Anastacia Pulman was not present at the meeting, but her report was read on her behalf by Calloway announcing positive feedback from Block Party from student groups and administration with a few logistical hiccups at the event.  

The legislative agenda consisted of appointment bills for the SA Supreme Court, with 5 students being sworn into the new position by the end of the night. 

The supreme court nomination process was a point of debate among the senate last fall, when nominee Brandon Bermingham had his initial acceptance rescinded. Bermingham, after bringing his concerns public last year, was sworn in as one of the justices this year.
