Let’s face it—college is expensive, but UAlbany students don’t have to look far to find resources that can help. Here are five campus organizations offering free items and services that many students may not realize are available.

Purple Pantry

Located in Campus Center 329, Purple Pantry provides students with free toiletries, canned fruits and vegetables, proteins, grains, pasta, snacks, and other packaged foods. The pantry also has refrigerated and frozen items like butter, eggs, yogurt, and milk.

The pantry receives donations and food from regional food banks and allows students to visit once every 14 days. Students sign in when they arrive and can select items based on the pantry’s guidelines for how much of each product they can take.

Staff members encourage students to use the resource whenever they need it.

Purple Pantry is open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free Market - Office of Sustainability

Students seeking clothing, household items or other everyday necessities can visit the Free Market, operated by the Office of Sustainability.  It is primarily stocked with clothing, but students can also find household items like pots and pans, bedsheets, shoes and decorations.

The Free Market is located in The Bean in the Campus Center and is open Mondays and Fridays from noon to 4 p.m., with no limit on how many items you can take.

Meghan Popcun, Assistant Director of Sustainability and Communications, says the Office of Sustainability works on programs ranging from campus infrastructure to student-focused sustainability initiatives.

“We do everything from coordinating advances to our built environment and our sustainable infrastructure, - [to] programs like composting for on-campus apartments and the Free Market,” Popcun said.

Purple Threads

Located in Campus Center 323, near Purple Pantry, Purple Threads offers free professional clothing and shoes that students can keep. Students may take three clothing items per semester or one full suit. Additional opportunities are available through special events held throughout the semester.

Clothing is donated by members of the UAlbany and surrounding communities, and items that do not fit Purple Threads’ needs are redirected to the campus Free Market.

Purple Threads also partners with other campus organizations, including Career and Professional Development and the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center.

“We want it to be available to everyone, not just people wandering around the campus center,” said Julia Rasmussen, Purple Thread’s Graduate Assistant Coordinator.

Students whose schedules do not line up with Purple Threads’ regular hours can email Rasmussen to arrange another time to visit at jrasmussen@albany.edu

Purple Threads is open Monday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the fall semester.

Gender and Sexuality Resource Center

The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, located in Campus Center West 0190, provides free supplies, educational resources and support for students navigating queer life on campus.

Students can pick up pads, tampons, condoms, dental dams, pregnancy tests, deodorant, face masks, Narcan and fentanyl test strips. They also have some fun freebies like pride flags, rubber duckies, and snacks.

The center also provides information about local services including Planned Parenthood, Albany Medical Center, and wellness coaching along with on-campus mental health resources like CAPS, Middle Earth, and other crisis hotlines.

The GSRC is also designed to be a space where students can spend time without needing to attend a specific program. Students can read, do homework, or relax between classes in the center’s comfortable and inclusive space.

The center is open to anyone Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also hosts events and programs at different scheduled times.

Multicultural Resource Center

The Multicultural Resource Center, located in Campus Center 091, offers students a place to find free snacks and tea from their tea bar, community, and other resources.

Beyond tangible items, the center provides access to peer educators, informational pamphlets and programs focused on the cultural experiences and needs of students on campus.

The center also hosts programs and participates in tabling events throughout campus. They encourage students to reach out through direct messages if they have questions or ideas through their Instagram

Students do not have to visit only when they need a specific item or resource.

“This is a resource for you to come and enjoy, and not just take something tangible but come take the joy of just being able to sit down and relax even if it’s for 15 minutes,” said Jonalis De La Rosa, a Certified Peer Educator in the center. “You can come here and feel very welcomed.”

The Multicultural Resource Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
