On Saturday, April 4 the University at Albany announced the hiring of Kelly Morrone as the next head coach of Women’s Basketball following the departure of Colleen Mullen in late March.

“Kelly is a proven winner who has consistently demonstrated the ability to build strong programs at every level,” said UAlbany Athletic Director Mark Benson in the press release.

According to the release, Morrone came to the Capital Region after a six-year tenure as the head coach of the Merrimack College Warriors. In the 2025-26 season, Morrone led the Warriors to a 19-13 overall record, a 15-5 mark in the MAAC and a berth in the WNIT.

Her playing career was spent at the University of South Carolina, where she graduated from in 2003.

Prior to Merrimack, she spent seven seasons as the head coach at Division III John Carroll University, and prior to that spent time at Buffalo, Davidson, Rhode Island and William and Mary as an assistant coach.

More about Morrone can be read here.

With this hiring, Morrone will look to build her roster for the upcoming season as the Great Danes will look to improve from last season, where they fell in the America East quarter finals to the Vermont Catamounts.
