Students at the University at Albany gathered around the Campus Center Fountain on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. Equipped with picket signs, whistles and a passion for justice, the demonstration was led by UAlbany College Democrats and UAlbany Students for Justice in Palestine, amongst others, with the goal of establishing a sanctuary campus.

“ICE has plagued the Capital Region & the University at Albany has done NOTHING to protect its student body,” read an Instagram post by the UAlbany College Democrats.

Students were encouraged to skip class for the event, and to push UAlbany to officially protect

undocumented students, faculty and staff from immigration enforcement via establishment of an  ICE alert system. The demonstration saw speeches and chants at the small fountain from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., followed by a march to University Hall. The crowd peacefully dispersed at 3 p.m.
