On Saturday (10/3) the University at Albany Great Danes hosted the Stony Brook Seawolves for their Hometown Heroes’ game and the annual battle for the Golden Apple.
With the bleachers filled with students and their families for Parents and Family weekend, the ambiance was definitely felt. In the first half, the Great Danes demonstrated great physicality and were able to put up points in the first half courtesy of 2 field goals but were unable to find the endzone.
Stony Brook scored the first touchdown of the game in the first half, along with a field goal of their own. They held a narrow 10-6 advantage on the scoreboard.
The Great Dane defense was at a disadvantage, with several of their starters inactive due to various injuries. They held up reasonably well in the first half, but the absences were felt heavily in the third quarter, when the Seawolves put up 21 points and kept the struggling Great Danes offense off of the scoreboard entirely in the 3rd quarter. By the time the game reached the 4th quarter, Stony Brook was up to 47 points, and despite Aiden Semo leading the Great Danes to the endzone for the first time after relieving starter Colin Parachek, the final score read 47-12 when the clock ran out.
When asked after the loss about his reflections regarding the season so far, wide receiver Josiah Barron said, “We’ve been going through a lot of adversity the whole season. This isn’t anything new. Adversity hits your door every day in life and football, you just got to be ready.”
Injuries have been very prevalent this season. In this game alone there was at least one injury per quarter. When asked about how they plan on responding to the injuries, Linebacker Troy Berschwinger said, “Using the next man up mentality. It’s a battle every single play. It’s like a six second window of a one-on-one battle. Stuff moves fast, so definitely that next man up mentality, and we believe in our guys.”
Following the game, Head Coach Jared Ambrose assessed the actions that occurred during the game. In his opening statement to the press he said, “I’m more surprised by the pure amount of mistakes that singular people made offensively tonight. You know, they’re a good team. They're a well funded, well supported, well coached program. I’m just saying they do a really good job of playing hard-nosed football.”
Now with the upcoming break this week, the Great Danes will have extra time to prepare for their next game against the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday October 18th for Homecoming. This bye week should give the injuries some time to heal, and give the team as a whole time to regenerate to correct their mistakes that were made during their game against Stony Brook.
