On Saturday April 11, the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team bested the University of Vermont Catamounts 12-9 on Senior Day.
“We stuck with the game plan,” said head coach Scott Marr.
The opening few minutes of the game saw neither squad get on the board, as offensive chances on both sides of the field were hard to come by and both goalies stood tall early.
UAlbany got an extra man opportunity just over five minutes into the game, as Tatum Lewis and Connor Hugenard were flagged for holding at the 9:40 mark. Despite getting several shots, the Great Danes were unable to capitalize and the game remained scoreless.
Both the Catamounts and Great Danes had good chances to get on the board in the middle part of the quarter, however a series of saves and turnovers kept both teams off of the board.
The Catamounts scored the first goal of the game with 2:54 left to play in the first quarter as Luke Reiter beat Brady Smith from up close, putting UVM in front 1-0.
Vermont got their first man-up chance of the game with 1:37 remaining, as UAlbany defender Max Neeson was called for a slash. Cullen Decker scored on the man-up with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter, giving the Catamounts a 2-0 advantage.
Silas Richmond started the scoring for the Great Danes on the board with 13:40 remaining in the second quarter, as he shrugged off a defender and put it past goalie Ryan Daly to cut the Catamount lead to 2-1.
Richmond found the net once again with 10:43 remaining, as he scored a highlight-reel goal to level the game 2-2.
Koleton Marquis would score his 18th goal of the season less than a minute later, to put the Great Danes in front 3-2, and force the Catamounts to call a timeout.
Ryan Doherty scored UAlbany's fourth consecutive goal with 8:49 left to play in the second, as he finished a great pass from Silas Richmond to push the lead to 4-2.
UVM got a goal back 33 seconds later, as Sean McCeney beat Smith up high to cut the Great Dane advantage to 4-3.
Max Goldstein leveled the game 4-4 at the 7:08 mark of the second quarter, as Brady Smith was beat stickside.
Doherty scored his second goal in a row to restore the Great Dane lead 5-4 with 3:25 left in the second quarter. Long Stick Midfielder (LSM) Jacob Smith faked out a Catamount defender, before finding Doherty who finished through contact.
Brandon Barnard scored his first of the game for UAlbany with 1:57 left in the first half, as he just about beat the shot clock to give the Great Danes a 6-4 advantage.
Just over a minute later, Max Neeson fired in a pole goal from 20 yards out to bring the UAlbany lead back to 7-4. Following this, the Great Danes were flagged for a delay of game penalty, and the Catamounts would take advantage of this to bring the lead back to 7-5 with 40.2 seconds left to play in the second quarter.
Marr was visibly frustrated with the officials following the call, and he called a timeout to get his team to regroup.
The third quarter’s first goal would be scored by Silas Richmond as he completed his hat trick at the 11:32 mark to make the score 8-5 in favor of UAlbany. This came after the Great Danes held possession for more than two full minutes.
Richmond scored a no-look, behind the back goal at the 8:57 mark of the third quarter after getting the ball in front of the Catamount net. This brought the advantage to 9-5, a game-high lead for UAlbany.
Tristan Whittaker got a goal back for UVM with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter to cut the lead to 9-6. Max Frattarolli beat Brady Smith less than a minute later to cut the lead further to 9-7.
This proved to be the final scoring of the third stanza, as both defenses tightened up across the final section of play.
The fourth quarter did not see any scoring early on, as neither team could generate many dangerous chances.
UAlbany got a man-up chance with 9:35 left to play, as Collin Bullock was flagged for a cross check. Jackson Palumb scored exactly 20 seconds later on a low shot off of a feed from Silas Richmond to give UAlbany a 10-7 lead.
Ryan Doherty completed a hat trick with 7:00 left in the game to push the advantage to 11-7.
Palumb was flagged for an illegal body check with 5:01 left to play, and Max Goldstein beat Brady Smith to cut the lead to 11-8 3x seconds later.
Ethan Pearson scored for UVM to cut the deficit further to 11-9, with 2:30 left to play in the game.
Max Neeson scored his second of the game with under a minute left in the game. The Catamounts opted to go into a 10-man ride, leaving their net empty. After getting a pass from Brady Smith, Neeson fired a shot that hopped into the net, to make a 12-9 game which turned out to be the final score.
With the win, the Great Danes improved to 7-4 overall and 5-0 in America East play. They also clinched the outright America East regular season title. Vermont fell to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in America East play.
