On Saturday March 7, the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team beat the Hobart Statesman 14-10.
“We played with some poise and maturity and just a real solid effort,” said Scott Marr, the team’s head coach.
The game would start slow for both offenses, as neither were able to find the back of the net on their first few possessions.
UAlbany would get a man-up opportunity with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The penalty would elapse, however Silas Richmond would give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead just over 30 seconds later.
Richmond and Brendan O’Keffe would score within 40 seconds of each other, to give the Great Danes a 3-0 lead just inside the 10 minute mark of the first quarter.
Connor DiTammaso would score a pair of goals 12 seconds apart for the Statesmen to cut the lead to 3-2, with 8:24 left to play in the first quarter.
Hobart would get their first man-up of the game at the 4:56 mark after Koleton Marquis was called for offsides, however the Great Danes would kill this off.
DiTammaso would complete his hat trick with just under 2:30 left to play to make the score 4-3, however Ryan Doherty would answer for UAlbany shortly after to restore the lead to 5-3.
Hobart would get a goal back just before the end of the first stanza as David Peterkin found the back of the net with seven seconds remaining, which would make the score 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Doherty was called for an illegal stick penalty between the first and second quarter, leading to an extra man opportunity for Hobart which they would convert, as DiTammasio would score his fourth of the game to level the score at 5-5. However, he would be called for an unsportsmanlike penalty immediately after, as he looked directly at goalie Brady Smill, leading the Great Danes getting a man advantage.
Richmond would score his third of the game to give UAlbany the lead back 6-5 with 11:27 remaining in the second quarter.
David Peterkin would tie it up a little more than two minutes later, as he used a shovel shot to beat Brady Smith and level the game 6-6.
That would prove to be the final goal of the first half, as the score board would read 6-6 at the break.
The Great Danes would struggle to find the net in the early going of the third quarter, as Hobart goalie Micheal Johnson was keeping the Statesmen in the game.
Both teams struggled to establish any offense as a series of turnovers and sloppy play plagued both sides to begin the second half.
Jackson Palumb would finally find the back of the net for the Great Danes just over six minutes into the third quarter, after he deposited a feed from Ryan Doherty into the back of the net and gave UAlbany a 7-6 lead.
Koleton Marquis would score the Great Danes’ second consecutive goal 59 seconds later, to bring the Great Dane lead to 8-6.
UAlbany would get their first man-up opportunity of the 2nd half with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, however the Statesmen would kill this off.
Marquis would score his second in a row with 2:50 remaining, as he beat Johnson with a no-look shot. Twelve seconds later, Doherty would score again to bring the lead to a then game high four at 10-6.
Hobart would not go down without a fight, as Slade Engstrom would beat Smith from in close to bring the score to 10-7 with 1:18 left to play in the third quarter.
Marquis would once again score 34 seconds into the fourth quarter, as he was left wide open in front of the net, and did not miss.
Teharonhiorens Maccomber would score his first of the game at the 13:04 mark of the fourth quarter.
Marquis would score his fourth of the game with 11:07 left to play to give the Great Danes a game high 6 goal lead, 13-7.
Salde Engstrom would score his second goal of the game with 6:45 left to play to bring the score to 13-8.
Jackson Palumb would get the goal back for the Great Danes with 5:04 remaining in the game. The goal would be briefly reviewed by the officials, but was upheld as UAlbany took a 14-8 lead.
Daniel Cano would score two goals in a row to bring the Great Dane lead to 14-10 with 2:55 remaining in the game.
These proved to be the final goals of the game, as the Great Danes emerged victorious 14-10.
