Sports Summary (9/1 - 9/7)

This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:


The UAlbany volleyball team recorded their first win on homecourt this season on Friday night (9/5).

Wednesday, September 3:

Field Hockey trounced the New Haven Chargers 10-0. Junior Pilar Lorenzini continued her hot start to the season by notching a hat-trick, the first of her career. Indy van Ek and Emma Straton both scored two goals, and three other Great Danes found the back of the net. Olivia Bell had two assists, while six other Great Danes tallied assists in the victory. 


Thursday, September 4:

Volleyball was defeated 3-0 in straight sets by the Syracuse Orange in the opening game of the UAlbany invitational. Shynelle Woroniuk led UAlbany with seven kills and 10 digs. Maria Olga Siapani tallied 21 assists. 


Friday, September 5:

Field Hockey was defeated 3-0 by the Columbia Lions. Pilar Lorenzini tallied five shots, and Tessa Overgoor and Jette Kurz each had three shots. In total, Lions outshouted the Great Danes 18-15. 


Women’s volleyball bested Cornell 3-1 to win their first match on homecourt in the UAlbany invitational. Shynelle Woroniuk led UAlbany with 17 kills. Brooke Malek led the Great Danes with 23 digs, and Maria Olga Siapani tallied 38 assists. 


Men’s soccer defeated Rhode Island 3-0 to keep their perfect record at home on the season. Issac Fillippo, Tommy McFadden and Ivar Gissurarson all got on the score sheet for the Great Danes. Rodrigo Hermelo had two assists on the night. Andrej Krivokapic recorded his second shutout of the season by making a pair of saves in the victory. 


Saturday, September 6:

Football was defeated by the Delaware State Hornets 37-32. The Game was the longest in program history, due to two separate weather delays that totaled around four hours. The game started at 1 p.m. and did not finish until 8 p.m. Quarterback Jack Shields tallied four total touchdowns to lead the Great Danes. On defense, Ron Holmes had 14 total tackles to lead UAlbany. 


Women’s volleyball completed an epic comeback to defeat the Canisius Golden Griffins. The Great Danes would drop the first two sets before storming back to win three in a row and win the final match of the UAlbany invitational. Shynelle Woroniuk tallied 23 kills, and Tori Wilson led the Great Danes with six blocks. UAlbany finished its invitational with a 2-1 record, and two selections on the all tournament team. 


Sunday, September 7:

Women’s soccer earned their first victory of the season; they bested the Le Moyne Dolphins 1-0. Selma Elverum scored the game's only goal in the 65th minute with an assist coming from Jolie Pye. The Dolphins outshouted the Great Danes 10-5; however, Claudia Volino made three saves for UAlbany to secure the win.
