The University at Albany Women’s Basketball team won 67-42 Wednesday night (11/20) against the Siena Saints to reclaim the Albany Cup.

“It was a really fun game to coach,” said head coach Colleen Mullen. “I’m so proud of how the team bounced forward.”

Siena won the tip, but UAlbany set the tone early with its defense, with Delanie Hill forcing a jump ball and a turnover in the first couple of possessions.

The Great Dane’s first basket came from Lara Langermann on a driving layup.

Moments later, a rebound from Gabriela Falcão led to a transition three-point basket from Martina Borrellas, giving UAlbany the lead 5-0 and forcing Siena to call their first timeout with 7:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Out of the timeout, the Great Danes applied full-court pressure and forced another turnover on an eight-second violation, sending the crowd into a roar.

The Great Danes closed the quarter with a buzzer-beating three-point basket from Bella Stuart, giving the Danes the lead 20-9 after one.

A three-point basket from Langermann opened the second quarter as UAlbany continued to build momentum. Amaya Stewart converted an and-one at the 7:55 mark, followed by another and-one finish from Borrellas at 7:22, giving the Great Danes the boost they needed offensively.

At the half, UAlbany led 40-18. Stewart led with 13 points and four rebounds, while Langermann added 11 points and four assists.

The Great Danes opened the second half with a layup from Borrellas. A minute later, Siena ended a long scoring drought, but UAlbany continued to be patient offensively as they closed out the third quarter leading 57-33.

UAlbany began the fourth quarter with a layup by Emma Zuccon. However, Siena would then come out more organized, forcing Coach Mullen to call her first timeout of the game with 7:54 remaining.

The Great Danes closed out the night with steady defense, securing a 67-42 win and lifting the Albany Cup trophy.

UAlbany was led by freshman forward Amaya Stewart, who notched 17 points and five rebounds. Martina Borrellas added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Lara Langermann scored 14 points, shooting 3-3 from downtown and also led the team in assists with four.

Siena was led by Caydence Haley and Francesca Schiro, who each scored eight points.

After the game, Stewart discussed what the win meant to her, especially as a freshman having such a significant impact. “It was a monument for the culture and community,” she said. “The energy today was amazing”.

Coach Mullen praised the team’s identity and another impressive assist showcase. “We moved the ball and had 15 assists, that's unselfish basketball,” she said. “This team shares it, plays for each other and I’m just really proud of them.”
