On Monday (12/1), The University at Albany Women’s Basketball team defeated the Bucknell Bison 65-62 in overtime.
The Bison would start strong in the first quarter. With their blocks coming quicker than the Great Danes. Bucknell was up 7-2 with 5:12 remaining in the first quarter.
Things would not improve much in the remaining part of the opening period as the Bison would end the quarter with a 17-8 lead, as Julia Palomo Vicente would knock down a buzzer beating 3 pointer to end the Great Danes first quarter on a high note.
UAlbany would be unable to capitalize on this momentum however, as struggles from 3 point range and miscommunication on defense would lead to Bucknell being up 24-14 with 4:22 left to play in the 2nd quarter.
UAlbany would come out looking like a different team in the 3rd quarter however; with 6:45 remaining in the 3rd stanza the Great Danes would cut the Bison lead to 28-25.
This hot streak would continue, as with 4:35 remaining in the 3rd period of play, the Great Danes would get the lead for the first time since the opening minute of the game as they would go in front 30-29.
The Bison would be able to stop the Great Danes momentum, as they would end the 3rd quarter with a 40-35 advantage after controlling the final minutes of play on both ends of the floor.
UAlbany would not be discouraged, as they would go on a 7-0 run highlighted by a steal and breakaway layup from Martina Borellas to give the Great Danes a 43-42 lead with 7:41 remaining in the game.
The 4th quarter would see the teams trade leads back and forth, with neither gaining a large advantage. A pair of Amaya Stewart free throws would tie the game at 51 with 1:44 remaining.
Amaya Stewart would make a clutch shot from inside the paint through contact with 17.1 seconds remaining to put UAlbany up 53-51. The Bison would call a timeout and with 0.2 seconds left in regulation, Tuana Coskun would make a layup to level the game at 53 and send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Bucknell would start out with a shot clock beating 3 point shot. This would be a tone setter as the Great Danes would fall back into their habits of the first quarter with a missed layup and a traveling violation. Bella Stuart would hit a triple to tie the game; however, Bucknell would push their lead to 62-58 with 1:26 remaining. However, these would prove to be the final points the Bison would score, as UAlbany would control the remainder of the game.
