On Tuesday (11/4), the University at Albany Women’s Basketball team won their season opener against the Marist Red Foxes by a score of 74-46.
“It was just such a joy to watch them smile and execute a game plan” said head Coach Colleen Mullen of her team’s victorious performance.
Defense was the main theme early on, as in the first two minutes, a layup from Great Dane center Gabriela Falcão was the only scoring from either side.
The next part of the 1st quarter saw the Great Danes defense continue to put pressure on the Red Foxes, holding them to just five points on 2-7 shooting midway through the first quarter, with the score reading 9-5 UAlbany with 4:51 remaining.
In the remaining part of the first quarter, the Great Danes offense found its footing, as they scored eight more points while shooting 43% from the field for the quarter, finishing the first quarter with a 17-9 lead.
The early part of the second quarter, saw much of the same story from the first quarter continue on. The Great Danes offense contented to show no hesitation to shoot the three ball, as Delanie Hill would connect on a triple from the left corner, that combined with a close finish from Amaya Stewart brought the score to 22-13 with 7:26 remaining in the second stanza.
The Red Foxes would swing some momentum back to their side, as three point shots on consecutive possessions caused by miscommunication on defense from UAlbany, cut the Great Dane lead to 24-19 with 5:56 remaining in the second quarter.
The Great Danes did not back down from this, as they responded with a 11-0 run of their own to bring the lead to 35-19 with just over 3:30 remaining.
The remainder of the second quarter saw the Great Danes offense continue to find open shots, as they seemed a step ahead of the Marist defense. Amaya Stewart impressed on defense, blocking a pair of Marist shots from up close late in the first half. When the buzzer sounded in the first half, UAlbany held a 39-22 lead over the Red Foxes.
The first part of the 3rd quarter, saw the UAlbany lead stabilize at 17 points. The Great Danes continued to bar the Marist offense, forcing bad shots, getting the lion's share of the rebounds on both ends of the floor leaving the score 43-26 with 4:34 left in the third.
The next two minutes saw the Great Danes go on an 11-1 run that featured a trio of three pointers, two of which came from Delanie Hill to push her tally to 16 points, and the UAlbany lead to 54-27 with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter.
In the final part of the third quarter, the Great Danes did not skip a beat, highlighted by an impressive three-point play by Amaya Stewart, UAlbany ended the third frame with a 59-32 advantage.
The Great Danes would continue their momentum, as they would go on a 9-3 run in the first five and more minutes of the fourth quarter, to extend the lead further to 68-35 with 4:28 left in the game.
The Red Foxes would score five in a row, to put a slight dent in the lead at 68-40 with 1:52 left to play.
The remainder of the game saw both teams score baskets, but little change was made to the final tally, as the Great Danes emerged victorious 74-46.
Taking a look at the score sheet, several Great Danes put on impressive performances. True Freshman Amaya Stewart scored an impressive 17 points while adding five rebounds and four blocks. Martina Borrellas also got into double figures with 12 points.
