Men’s Basketball Falls Late to NJIT

The University at Albany Men's Basketball team lost on Thursday (1/29), to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders by a score of 77-68.


NJIT got out of the gate strong by gaining a 12-6 lead in the first four and a half minutes of the game. 


The Great Danes did bounce back however, as they would cut the Highlanders’ lead to 16-13, seven minutes into the game, as both offensives were shooting well in the early stages of the game. 


Following that, NJIT would go on a 9-2 run, to increase their lead 25-15 with 8:30 left in the first half.

With about 2 minutes left in the first half, UAlbany guard Zach Matulu left the game with what appeared to be a lower body injury, and he would not return for the rest of the game. The last 4 minutes of the first half were back and forth, however the Highlanders would lead 39-33 over the Great Danes at halftime.


One minute into the second half, NJIT scored 5 unanswered points to increase their lead to 44-33.Following this, UAlbany went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 46-42 with 16:20 left in the second half.

The Highlanders responded with a 7-1 run to expand their lead to 53-43 with 13:50 left in the game. Down by ten points, the Great Danes followed up with 11 unanswered points to take their first lead of the second half and go up 54-53 with 9:08 left to go.


After taking the lead, the UAlbany offense only scored one point in the next four minutes, and NJIT would lead 63-55 with 4:30 remaining in the game. 


The Great Danes cut the lead to 65-62 with 2:33 left in the game, however this would be the closest UAlbany would come to getting the lead back. NJIT would be able to close out the game with a succession of free throws, and they would hold on to win 77-68.


UAlbany was led in scoring by Amir Lindsey, who scored 23 points and Abdoulaye Fall, who scored 14 points.


Sebastian Robinson led the Highlanders in points with 17. David Bolden, Ari Fulton, Quinton Duncan and Melvyn Ebonkoli all scored in double figures for NJIT.
