On Saturday Feb. 28, the University at Albany Men’s Basketball team bested the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 84-61.
“I thought our guys responded really well after a tough loss on Thursday. I wasn’t happy with our effort or focus on that game, but we bounced back today.” said head coach Dwyane Killings.
The Great Danes took the lead early, as they caused several UNH turnovers and made several shots to take an 11-6 lead at the 15:35 mark of the first half.
This good start continued, as UAlbany was able to turn defense into offense and extend their lead to 16-7 with 12:21 remaining in the first period of play.
The Great Danes then went on a 7-0 run, headlined by an Amir Lindsey triple to push their lead to 23-7 with 9:07 remaining in the first half.
UAlbany continued to be all over the Wildcats in the first half, as with 3:29 left in the first half, the score board read 34-10 in favor of the Great Danes, who up to that point had held New Hampshire to just 3-of-20 shooting.
The remainder of the opening stanza was much of the same, as The Great Danes held a commanding 40-16 advantage at the break.
Miles Rose led the first half scoring for UAlbany with 13 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting. Zacharie Matulu, playing his first game in several weeks, put up seven points in an efficient effort in the first half.
The Great Danes held the Wildcats to just 5-24 shooting in the first half, while forcing 11 turnovers. New Hampshire also had major struggles at the free throw line, going 3-13 from the charity stripe.
To start the second half, Okechukwu Okeke made a layup, however, Tyler Bike responded with a three for UNH that caused coach Killings to call a timeout with 18:47 remaining with the Great Danes up 42-19.
The lead stabilized throughout the early portions of the second half, as thanks to a run of points from Zachaire Matulu, UAlbany remained up 52-29 with just over 15:30 left to play in the game.
The Great Danes extended their lead further in the next portion of action, as they would start to knock down a large volume of threes and be up 65-36 with 12:15 to go in the game.
New Hampshire did not go down without a fight, as they cut the UAlbany lead to 70-47 with 7:46 remaining in the game.
The Wildcats continued to cut into the Great Dane lead but not by enough to make a significant difference, as UAlbany would be up 80-56 with 2:42 left to play.
The game concluded with The Great Danes continuing their effort over UNH. Both of the UAlbany Seniors, Okeke and Issac Abidde received standing ovations as they checked out of the game late.
The final seconds of the game ticked away as the Great Danes emerged victorious 81-64. Okeke notched a double-double with a high 16 of points and a team high of 10 rebounds. Miles Rose tied for the team lead in points, on 7-of-10 shooting. Amir Lindsey dished out a team high seven assists.
UAlbany improved to 11-19 overall and 7-8 in the America East with the win, while New Hampshire fell to 8-20 overall and 4-11 in America East play.
