This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:

Tuesday, February 17th
Men’s lacrosse fell to the Penn Quakers by a score of 15-10. Silas Richmond recorded four goals and three assists. Koleton Marquis and Jackson Palumb each recorded two goals and an assist. Brady Smith made eight saves in net. The Great Danes recorded 35 total shots.
Thursday, February 19th
Men’s Basketball used a strong second half to beat the NJIT Highlanders 81-63. After being down 10 points at halftime, the Great Danes would outscore the Highlanders by 28 points in the second half. Amir Lindsey tallied 22 points to lead the scoring. Okechukwu Okeke recorded a 15 point, 11 rebound double-double. Jaden Kempson had 16 points and two blocks.
Women’s basketball dropped a close game to the NJIT Highlanders 70-64. Amaya Stewart had a strong performance, scoring 25 points while only missing three shots. Delanie Hill recorded 12 points. Martina Borellas led the Great Danes in assists with six.
Friday, February 20th
Baseball opened their season with a 16-8 loss against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Micheal Maggio had a strong day at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Levi McAllister went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Cooper Loyal scored two runs. Kyle Stephens drew two walks. On the mound, Dylan Banner went 2.2 innings while striking out three and giving up two earned runs. Matthew Mariano pitched the most innings on the day with 3.1 and only allowed one earned run. Jameson Walsh pitched two innings and surrendered two earned runs.
Saturday, February 21st
Men’s basketball dropped a close game to the UMBC Retrievers 66-62. Tarique Foster topped the scoring charts for the Great Danes with 17, while shooting 5-for-6 from three point range. Amir Lindsey had 15 points and two assists. Okechuckwu Okeke tallied 14 points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
Women’s basketball won in double overtime 69-63 over the UMBC Retrievers. Delanie Hill led the way for UAlbany with 19 points. Amaya Stewart and Martina Borellas were the other Great Danes in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Bella Stewart dished out three assists.
Men’s lacrosse earned their first win of the season by downing the Drexel Dragons 17-9. Koleton Marquis impressed once again by scoring four goals and adding an assist. Silas Richmond scored three goals and recorded three assists. Jacob Smith scored a pair of pole goals and grabbed eight ground balls. Austin Oppenheim had a strong day at the faceoff, going 13-for-20 and scoring a goal. Brady Smith made seven saves.
Women’s lacrosse pulled off the upset over the Harvard Crimson 13-12 in overtime. Kloey Roos once again put in a strong performance by scoring a team leading four goals and adding an assist. Paisley Cook led in total points with six (three goals, three assists). Ravan Marsell scored a goal and notched three assists. Riley Forthofer scored the game-winning goal.
Baseball was swept in a double header by the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
In game one, Texas Tech defeated UAlbany 15-1 in seven innings. Patrick DeSarno had a strong game at the plate going 2-for-3 and recording the only RBI of the game. Kyle Stephens, Jaxon Mueller and Zach Mravlja each recorded hits. On the mound, Ethan Nardacci started the game and went 2.2 innings while surrendering 12 runs (10 ER) and recording a strikeout. Zach Nalawadi pitched 3.1 innings and gave up three runs on four hits.
In game two, the Great Danes lost 8-6 in heartbreaking fashion. UAlbany would be up 6-2 late, however the Red Raiders would complete a comeback topped off by a walkoff two-run home run by Robin Villeneuve. Luke Filippi provided the majority of the offense for the Great Danes, going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. Jaxon Mueller recorded an RBI while going 1-for-2. The starting pitcher, Christian Mello put in a solid performance, allowing just one run in four innings of work while striking out five batters. Alex Enea was the other UAlbany pitcher to see action. In 4.2 innings, he gave up seven runs, seven hits and struck out three.
Men’s track and field finished second in the America East championships, falling 12.5 points behind the UMass Lowell Riverhawks. UAlbany emerged victorious in the 4x800m relay, while breaking a 14-year-old record. Tooni Ogunyeye earned gold medals in the 60 and 200m sprints. en route to winning the outstanding track performer and coached awards.
Women’s track and field also came in second place at the America East championships, finishing 20 points behind the UMBC Retrievers. The Great Danes earned a total of four gold medals. The 4x800m and DMR teams both came in first place. Adaliz Hunt prevailed to win the 60m sprint and Nattaly Lindo was victorious in the weight throw.
Sunday, February 22nd
Baseball fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 10-0 in eight innings to conclude their season-opening series. Cooper Loyal, Tre Mariano and Zach Mravlja each went 1-for-3 at the plate. On the mound, Brian Cadiex was charged with the loss after going four innings and giving up two runs while striking out a pair of batters. Tyler Kneller pitched a scoreless inning. Mark Gajowski pitched two innings and gave up five total runs. Tye Mariano went for 0.2 of an inning and gave up the final three runs of the game.
Women’s golf recorded an eighth place finish to open their spring season at the Space Coast Classic in Melbourne, Florida. Madison Kuratani led the way for the Great Danes by finishing five over and was tied for 18th place. Mia Cepeda finished nine over, to come home in 26th place and Thantita Aungsuseewong finished 14 over to finish out the top 45 finishers for UAlbany.
