This past week saw the following results for University at Albany sports:

Thursday, August 27

The men’s soccer home opener against the FDU Knights was declared a no contest after 45 minutes of play. The teams played a scoreless first half before persistent rain and thunderstorms caused the game to be canceled. 

Friday, August 28

Field Hockey topped the Wagner Seahawks 4-1 in their season opener. Four different players scored for the Great Danes in the win. The Seahawks outshot the Great Danes 13-9. Merle Vaandrager made five saves in net for UAlbany. 

Football started their season with a 28-14 win over the New Hampshire Wildcats. Quarterback Kai Colon was 7-17 passing for 56 yards and an interception, but had 15 rushed for 92 yards on the ground. Aiden Semo ran for a pair of touchdowns. Joey Koch racked up 144 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Rahshan La Mons had 70 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Dillon Dunathan started on defense, tallying two tackles-for-losses and an interception. Shawan Lewis found space all night, putting up 2.5 sacks. 

Saturday, August 29

Women’s soccer fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats by a score of 2-1. Oluchi Njoku scored UAlbany’s lone goal of the game by converting a penalty kick. Claudia Volino made a pair of saves. Seven different players recorded shots for the Great Danes. 

Volleyball opened their season with a pair of defeats at the Black Knight invitational. 

In their first match, the Great Danes were bested 3-1 by the Iowa Hawkeyes. Pinar Erol recorded 13 kills. Campbell Robinson had nine kills and two assists. Addy Bianchini racked up 33 assists in the match.

In the day's second match, UAlbany fell 3-0 to the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Campbell Robinson led the way with seven kills. Pinar Erol had five kills and an assist. Madison Hess dished out a team high of 13 assists in the loss. 

Sunday, August 30

Field hockey scored an impressive win by knocking off the Boston College Eagles 4-3. Lillian Willis, Mara Kuskes, Victoria Derdoy and Quinty Reumer all scored goals for the Great Danes. Jette Kurz also pitched in with an assist. In net, Merle Vaandrager made four total saves. 

Volleyball finished their season opening weekend with a narrow 3-2 to the Army Black Knights. Lilly Lott led the charge with 14 kills and two assists. Pinar Erol capped off a solid weekend performance with a 10-kill, two-assist performance. Addy Bianchini recorded 39 assists in the match. 

Men’s soccer emerged victorious over the Colgate Raiders by a score of 3-0. Yuta Kimata scored just before halftime, and Alexander Clive and Rodrigo Hermelo both scored in the second half. The Great Danes outshot the Raiders 20-4. Alexander Genz made a sole save in the win.
