The University at Albany women’s basketball team defeated the Binghamton Bearcats 52-41 last Saturday night (2/14), earning a hard-fought conference win after falling to the Bearcats 63-61 in Binghamton in their previous meeting earlier this season.

“It was a tough way to play, but I’m proud of my team for the way they stayed poised,” said Head Coach Colleen Mullen following the game.

UAlbany won the opening tip and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Delanie Hill opened the game with a layup.

Binghamton answered moments later, with a midrange jumper from Meghan Casey, but the Great Danes settled into their offense early showing good structure.

Júlia Palomo Vicente responded with an up-and-under finish before Lara Langermann knocked down UAlbany’s first triple off a Gabriela Falcão assist. Another three from Vicente, followed by a triple coming off a handoff, gave the Great Danes a 13-3 lead and forced an early Binghamton timeout.

After the timeout, Binghamton ramped up its defensive pressure, throwing different coverages and blitzing the Great Dane’s wings and guards. Still, UAlbany continued to find advantages on the offensive end. Amaya Stewart checked into the game and made her presence known by drawing fouls and playing well defensively.

A late steal from Lara Langermann closed the first quarter, giving the Great Danes the lead 18-5 after one quarter.

Later in the second quarter, Emma Hákonardóttir sparked another run for the Great Danes, and Hill connected with Stewart for a layup late to extend the lead. UAlbany would enter halftime in control, leading 33-14.

Delanie Hill and Júlia Palomo Vicente each scored eight points in the first half while Amaya Stewart and Bella Stuart’s defensive presences limited Binghamton’s low-post scoring.

There was a shift in energy between the two teams, with Binghamton coming out of the gate strong in the second half, sparking a 9-0 run that cut into the deficit, forcing a UAlbany timeout. Stewart stopped the run by attacking the rim and getting to the free-throw line, helping the Great Danes regain their momentum and composure during a difficult stretch offensively.

Despite the ongoing pressure from the Bearcats, UAlbany stayed aggressive by drawing fouls and making their free throws. Although it was a difficult quarter for the Great Danes, Bella Stuart scored UAlbany’s first basket with a minute remaining, followed by a Delanie Hill charge giving the Great Danes some momentum going into the fourth quarter leading 44-26.

Binghamton continued to fight in the final period, scoring early and forcing consecutive turnovers that trimmed the lead into single digits. The Bearcats’ defensive pressure created another UAlbany timeout midway through the quarter but Hill responded calmly by getting to the free throw line and converting key free throws down the stretch.

In the closing minutes, Delanie Hill drew another charge, and Lara Langermann sealed the deal with a dagger layup off a handoff from Hill, securing a 52-41 victory for the Great Danes.

Palomo Vicente ended the game scoring an efficient 13 points, while Delanie Hill added 11 points and 4 rebounds. Lara Langermann did a little bit of everything with eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Amaya Stewart added nine points while anchoring the defense.

The Great Danes showcased their strong ball movement, finishing with 11 assists. Coach Mullen emphasized the team’s composure against Binghamton’s pressure defense.

“I wanted my team to use pass fakes and pivots as much as possible,” Mullen said. “We're at our best when we continue to score off of our ball movement.”

Binghamton was led by Yaniyah Boyd with 11 points. Kendall Bennet also grabbed 12 rebounds.

With the win, the Great Danes improved to 13-12 overall and 3-9 in America East play. The Bearcats fell to 17-8 overall, and 9-3 in the America East.

UAlbany will return to action at home on Feb. 19  at 6:30 p.m. against the NJIT Highlanders.
